Usenet Vs Torrents

Usenet and torrenting are both appreciated by internet users for their downloads – but they work in very different ways.

Which is better for digital content (movies, images, music ...), USENET vs TORRENT?

USENET TORRENTS
Speed

High speeds since you connect to servers that support speeds up to 1Gbit/s like Newshosting.

You can download your maximum bandwidth instantly. No waiting time before downloading.

When it comes to sharing files, the speed varies depending on different factors:

Other internet users who have already downloaded the files. You download your files from others, which limits the download speeds.

The nature and number of seeds and leeches.

It will also depend on your VPN. You need to download torrents through a VPN because the Torrent protocol is one of the least secure around. But unfortunately a VPN can lose you some speed!

Your ratio: The ratio of the above two numbers. Usually seeds/peers.

Free/not free

Usenet is not available for free – thankfully – since payment has allowed the development of a very interesting network.

We recommend Newshosting for $9.99/month for excellent Usenet access.

Torrenting is free in itself but a VPN is necessary to protect your downloads. So it will cost you money as well. If you are looking for a VPN we like IPVanish as it integrates a Proxy SOCKS5 dedicated to torrenting.

We always recommend a VPN that has the SOCKS5 option for downloading on BitTorrent. For a VPN connection does change your overall connection and can interfere with your surfing as it changes the IP. But with a SOCKS5 proxy only your torrenting program uses the SOCKS5 while the rest of your network connection stays neutral, using your ISP IP. The other advantage of SOCKS5 is to make sure that torrenting only occurs when the SOCKS5 protocol is active so your IP address can never publicly appear on the torrent network by accident.

Safety

Included thanks to SSL encryption in all connection addresses.

The torrent protocol is totally outmoded in this respect. No default encryption, no IP protection. You need to use a VPN or a SOCKS5 proxy to secure your connection.

IPVanish, the best VPN offers a VPN as well as SOCKS5

Confidentiality

Very important as your ISP IP never appears on the Usenet network

The Usenet service provider can identify you from your login and password. Only your USP knows your connection IP. You can change that as well by connecting to a VPN first. However we don't find this necessary since Usenet USPs have always respected confidentiality as a policy and have never revealed a connection IP!

Confidentiality for the torrent protocol is a disaster.

Never download a torrent with your ISP IP. On Torrent your IP is made public, it appears on the network. So mass surveillance is very easy.

You definitely need to use a No Logs VPN like IPVanish to hide your ISP IP

Anonymity

Confidentiality is key to the Usenet network. You can easily become totally anonymous:

It is possible to pay in Bitcoin

It is possible to connect through a VPN

Definitely use a VPN like IPVanish for it is….

No Logs: no record of your activities

It protects your IP by masking it with one of your own

It is possible to pay in Bitcoin

Independence

Usenet can be enough on its own. No need for a forum, or a site to download a torrent that contains the file

With a Newsreader you access the Usenet network independently of any third party

Torrent users are dependent on the site or forum that imposes its order: ratio – login – presentation…

Content

There is an impressive amount of content since uploaders post a lot on Usenet. There are more than 25TB of data posted every single day in uploads! All kinds of content is available.

The length of time (longevity) of a file on Usenet depends on the retention of the servers (time in which the Usenet servers keep the files).

Newshosting, the best USP keeps all posted files for days.

There is also a lot of content on Torrent as it has a lot of users (BitTorrent is the most popular file-sharing protocol).

But the longevity of a file depends on its popularity which dictates its presence on the network. This means only popular files are shared. Unpopular files disappear quickly once any interest at the beginning has vanished.

The less a file interests others, the less likely you are to find it.
Surveillance

Usenet is fairly considered as network protocol and not a file-sharing system like Torrents or p2p (emule).

There is no surveillance on the Usenet network. No monitoring of your activities by the USPs. They do not feel the need to monitor the site since they are just access providers.

And the network is secured by 256Bit SSL so no company can track your downloads. SSL guarantees no exterior surveillance – everything you download is secured by SSL.

Torrent is the protocol for file sharing that is most monitored by everyone

What a lot of people don't know is that BitTorrent networks are closely monitored by unscrupulous companies, content monitoring sites, and defenders of authors' rights. This wide surveillance includes:

One that includes your IP. The Top 100 films, current music is constantly updated.

Another one establishes connections with peers to evaluate the participation of each IP in sharing activities.

File sharing

No sharing so no obligatory uploads nor ratio.

Torrent (or BitTorrent) is a protocol to transfer data peer to peer (p2p).

The sharing ratio is trick hidden behind a front of community

On private trackers the sharing ratio can be 1 so if you do not maintain your ratio you will be forbidden from downloading until your ratio increases (so you have to upload only until your sharing ratio improves).

Forget about torrents, and use the Usenet network!

Usenet's advantages are much greater:

  • Connection speed matches your bandwidth, and remains constant. This means a Usenet user can download whenever they like without worrying about ratio, uploads… With Usenet, downloading is unlimited.

  • Downloading is secured by SSL. So your downloads are not monitored. Confidentiality of usage is respected.

  • High anonymity since there are No Logs, no monitoring and SSL comes for free.

Using BitTorrent and Usenet

You can use both methods if you prefer. The great advantage of Newshosting is that it includes a free VPN with its Usenet package. So you can discover Usenet and continue to download torrents every now and then.

Torrent is a good file sharing protocol but a VPN is absolutely necessary for torrenting. Torrent is a public site that is closely watched. Newshosting's VPN will change your IP so your torrenting becomes anonymous.

The VPN from Newshosting is perfect for this. Newshosting VPN has lots of servers in Holland. Use it with Vuze which includes a protection in case the VPN stops functioning.
